The Story of Dave
Here's a familiar scene. Dave, driving through the southern Laurentian Mountains noticed it getting progressively colder as he drove. Dark clouds gathered up over the mountains as the sun struggled to find it's way to the earth. Having his paints in the car with him, Dave pulled over and began to paint the rolling landscape with it's natural light show.
Now situated in the picturesque setting of Brockville Ontario, Canada, Dave has spent the past twenty plus years painting a variety of Canadian landscapes. But it wasn't always this way. Originally a musician playing in the Montreal area, Dave didn't take paint brush to hand until 1978. You know the old story. You wander through an art display and think "I could do that". Well, for Dave, he really could do that. Natural ability or not, we all pay our dues, and Dave studied initially with Ron Simpkins, a Quebec landscape artist. Dave also studied the work of the Group of Seven which included spending some time with A.J. Casson in the early to mid 80's. Dave also had the opportunity to meet with Robert McMichael at his home in Belfountain Ontario. Mr. McMichael also found Dave's work promising.
Dave happily spent four consequetive summers traveling north of Toronto with several other landscape artists to paint.
If you ask Dave, he would describe himself as a semi-impressionist painter. Detail and realism are not what moves this man. Strong brush strokes that hint towards detail are more reflective of his style. Rythms of shape, symmetry, patterns of color and light are characteristic of the many elements that call to Dave to take his brush in hand. Much of Dave's work starts as rough pieces in the field, only to be finished later in his studio in Brockville.
David Charles Lane was born in Montreal Quebec on October 29th, 1947. David resided in Montreal until 1981 when he and his family moved to Mississauga, Ontario. From there they came to Brockville Ontario where Dave continues to reside.
